Virtue Tarot Cards

November 2023 - 2 weeks

For my Drawing Characters in Costume course, I was tasked with illustrating a set of three tarot cards of my choosing. I chose the triad of virtues: justice, strength, and temperance. The final illustrations were painted using watercolors and india ink, and final text was added in Adobe Illustrator.

As the original tarot card for justice depicted a king with a sword, who was sometimes blindfolded, I wanted to instead have a queen with a sword. She is not angry or scary, but intended to be a powerful figure as is the notion of justice. Each tarot card figure had her own flower that represented her virtue: the rose for justice, the peony for strength, and the iris for temperance.
