Cyanotype Print, Procreate edits
Back in July, I had the honor of helping lead a workshop at the local art festival about cyanotype printing. I fell in love with its tedious and unpredictable results, and of course that striking blue color. For Peachtober’s prompt of stardust, I knew I had to attempt a digital illustration turned cyanotype print.
I illustrated the girl walking along stardust in Procreate, then took it into Photoshop to create a negative that I printed onto a sheet of mylar. I accidentally overexposed the print, but it ended up making a cool hazy effect.
The negatives exposing in the sun
After four different print attempts, I really didn’t get one “perfect” print. Between over and underexposure, patchy coated papers, and my printer’s ink for being strong enough, each print had something holding it back.
I brought the prints into Procreate to make minor edits, and I ended up falling in love with one print. There’s something magical about something that is inherently imperfect. Though my hopes were high in the beginning, I’m glad I attempted a unique process instead of a reliable result.
